10 Lip Product Fails From 2016

This time last year, I had 4 to 6 lip products, aside from plain lip balms.

In mid- June I watched Jaclyn Hill's Ride or Die Makeup video, and thought to do a tag on my newly created channel. I was hard pressed when I got to lips and eye shadow (which will be another video or post, after I explore a bit).

I had a few issues with lipstick in the first place:

  • My lips dry out and breakout easily - which is weird, cause my nose, up, is a tank. (My cheeks can be a little iffy around my period though.)

  • I hate checking for it on my teeth constantly

  • I hate reapplying it every moment of the day

  • I wasn't experienced/had bad experiences picking out shades (especially to compliment my skin tone)

  • I kept picking up the same 3 shades of dark red, red-orange, and pink, as you may notice

Then I saw the explosion of liquid lipsticks in the US. They are not popular in Tokyo area, yet. Though I saw a self professed party-boy with some Jeffree Star shades on his Instagram just yesterday! Tokyo, for the most part, is still experimenting with stains. My students, who aren't supposed to wear makeup(school rule), love stains. Shhh...keep it on the DL.

I find, however, most Japanese stains don't give enough color payoff for my dark lips. Some tinted lip balms do this well, but it's just tinted. From the middle of last year, I set off in search of a lip product that I'll love as passionately as Jaclyn Hill loves blinging cheeks!

I took stock of my 7 month search last week. And there have been some lip product causalities (as well as my wallet, but I digress).

These lip depressors are the subject of today's blog, in order of annoyance to heartbreaker:

#10 Rimmel Magical Stay Lip Coat

It's suppose to make any lipstick smudge proof, through eating and such, for up to 60 instances of contact.

I think it does that but it's extremely drying for my lips. Luckily, Rimmel's parent company Kose (mother of Tarte) perfected the formula and made a lip coat for double the price under their own name called 'Lip Coat Magic' (how original...).

#9 Kanebo Media Creamy Lasting Lip

I don't know how long it's supposed to last, but it doesn't matter because it's so sheer.

#8 Maybelline Water Shiny Milky (no joke)

It's a weird, thick, wet consistency that looks nice on a swatch but feels odd on the lips. Not to mention, it smudges like no one's business.

#7-6 Kate CC Lip Cream/Treatment

I bought them together and they both have zero color on me.

Yes, I swatched that...really I did.

#5 Kate Volume Up Rouge

(when will I learn...)

It's a gloss??...Rouge usually means lipstick/color, right?!?

#4 Sephora Luster Mat

Much like and unlike acrylic paint, it's streaky and does not dry down.

#3 Revlon Ultra HD Matte Lipcolor

Same as above, but chunky. If that makes sense.

#2 Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick

Pretty color that drys down, but....DAMN...this formula smells like magic marker and roses. I can't put it under my nose.

Unfortunately, that's where my lips are.

And...#1 Sephora Lip Artist

First of all, what is that tiny a** lip brush. So I bought an actual lip brush, only to discover there is no difference in consistency between the "liquid lipsticks" and the glosses. And since the liquid lips don't dry down, the gloss just disappears into the lipstick.

Not impressed. You can tell I tried.

Notably, I have been a member of LipMonthly's subscription service about 6 months now, and none of the products they have sent me are in this list of duds.

Go LipMonthly!

You can use my referral code and you get one if/when you sign up, and I get a discount off my next bag... nudge, nudge, wink, wink.

If you made it this far, thank you!
